After a cold winter, there are some repairs you may have to make once spring arrives. Doing this early in the season can ensure these problems do not become much worse, resulting in expensive repair bills. Two things you should check are the garage door and your gutters. Below are some tips on how you can do this.

Garage Door

If you have a wooden garage door, it could have water damage from all the snow and ice you received over the winter. This increased moisture can cause the door as well as the door framing to swell. You may notice the door rubbing against the frame when it opens and closes. The door may also get stuck while opening or closing.

Check the garage-door springs for any visible signs of damage and make sure the springs are not broken in any areas. In some cases, the springs may be encased in tubing. If so, lift the garage door manually. If it is very hard to open, the springs may be broken inside the tube. Signs of spring problems are a garage door that opens partway and then stops or a loud banging sound that occurs when the door opens. The door may also fall very fast when it is going down.

Check Gutters

Your gutters can become damaged if you had heavy snowfall during the winter. Inspect them all the way around your home for any sagging or bending. Check the gutters for any leaks or holes. If so, you need to either repair the gutters or completely replace them.

You should also make sure the gutters are not filled with debris. If this happens, water will back up, causing damage to your roof. If you find debris, you can use a small broom to sweep it out if there is not a lot of debris. You can also use a garden hose to wash out the gutters.

The gutters should pitch toward the downspouts so the water can flow properly. After it rains, look in the gutters. If you see any standing water in them, they are likely not pitched properly.

If you find problems with your garage door or gutters that you do not know how to take care of, contact a contractor to come to your home and repair the problems for you. This will ensure the work is done properly so no further damage is done. For more information, check out the websites of companies that repair garage doors or maintain gutters.
